Scary Logos Wiki
It's now safe to turn off your computer Screen

Similar to Rated SPG and Nintendo GameCube Unknown Creepy Kill Screen, this page is not about a logo perse, but due to this being one of the oldest pages on the wiki we are keeping it.

1st Screen (1993-2000)[]

A small white window shows up with the message It is now safe to turn off your computer and the small icon, of a window overlooking the moon and the night sky, next to it. The heading of the window says "Shutdown Computer" and has a blue background. This is used in older Windows NT versions, ranging from Windows NT 3.1 to Windows 2000. The background is either the same as the boot screen, or whatever the user has set before they shut down the computer.

Variants[]

  • From Windows NT 3.1 to 4.0, there is an option to restart the computer via a button on the window via the "Restart" button.
  • On Windows NT 4.0, the window is redesigned. The header's context button on the left is replaced by the disabled close (X) button on the right, and the body's color was changed to light gray.
  • On Windows 2000, the window is redesigned again as the background is permanently blue and there is no longer an option to restart. The small icon is replaced by a Windows 2000 logo that is slotted above the main message (with a gradient blue bar seperating the message from the logo) and below the header, which is now empty and devoid of any text or button.

2nd Screen (1995-present)[]

The screen shows up with the message It's now safe to turn off your computer. in either red-orange or white color below it on a black background. This is used on all Windows 9x versions along with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.

Variants[]

Windows XP (Shutdown)
  • The Windows XP version has the same version, but the 2001-2006 Windows logo is shown and below it has the same text from the last logo, but in white instead.
    • From Windows XP onwards, the "It's" in the message is replaced with "It is", and, on Vista and 7, the period at the end was removed until either Windows 8 or Windows 10.
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11 show only the text.
    • From Windows 8 or Windows 10 onwards, the text is changed to "It is now safe to power off the system."

Music/Sounds[]

Silence.

Scare Factor[]

  • Low for the first logo. A few may be startled by the silence, but this screen is tame compared to the second logo.
  • Low to medium for the main variants of the second screen, including the one on Windows 9x, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11. The red-orange or white text on a black background won't sit well with some. The silence may also contribute.
  • Minimal to low for the XP version. The dark background can still startle some, but it's tamer thanks to the presence of the Windows XP logo.
